Holding peanut stolons in your hand...thinking, "they would be better in the ground,"? Think no further!

Are you ready to propagate your newly acquired peanut stolons? Haven’t purchased but are curious what stolons are? Please keep reading to learn how we plant perennial peanut from stolons in 5 simple steps.

What are peanut stolons?

University of Hawaii offers description of Stolons : “(runners, sprigs) are “mini-plants” complete with roots. They develop from specialized stems that lay on the ground and produce roots at the nodes. Stolons should be treated as transplants, carefully removed from the ground, and covered to prevent drying during transport or storage. Plant them as quickly as possible. Remove stolon sections from the mother plant and place each rooted plantled 1⁄2–1 inch deep in the soil. Be careful not to bury the plant too deeply. Space transplanted stolons 10 –12 inches apart. Keep moist during establishment. Stolons will produce a uniform groundcover in 2–5 months.”

Peanut stolons laid in trench rows 4 inches apart atop red cinder.

How to plant the Peanut from stolon.

1. Prepare parallel trenches with approximately 1 foot spacing or less and 4 inches depth—this close placement allows the Peanut to become quickly established and limits weed development

2. Lay or coil wet Peanut in trench end-to-end or less than 6-inch spacing. (*Remember –Perennial Peanut stolons will perish if exposed to direct sun as they have no root-ball; we plant our stolons under the cover of a canopy.)

3. Water Peanut in trenches

4. Cover Peanut stolons lightly with topsoil and mulch leaving the most minimal foliage exposed. Stolons do not have a root-ball and are much less hardy then potted plants.

5. Water covered trenches so planting medium secures to stolon roots

Water as needed, but always at dusk, so Peanut stays moist for 12+ hours

Stolon plants are an excellent low-cost option; however, stolons are extremely sun sensitive and development is approximately 1-month behind potted plants.

$1 a square foot $100 minimum pickup from homestead.
